Craft Camp Day 2: Green Rain

At lunch today, one of the Latvian women said outside there was a green rain, nota sour rain. It was the sort of light sprinkle that I call mildew weather. The rain started around 11 and was finished by 3, so there was little inconvenience.

I spent the day in the Medieval Mittens workshop. It was extremely challenging, even though we had an incredibly capable instructor. She was determined to stay true to tradition, and showed us a decrease method that has opened doors for me. It's a bit tricky, and she says it's rarely used these days, but I can tell you it's my new go-to method when decreasing on the left side when knitting in the round. How often will I use it? Very often.

Craft camp is held in Olustvere, and the main purpose is an agricultural college. We stay in the dorms, and eat in the dining hall. I'm having a bit of challenge with the food, although I'm thoroughly enjoying the dark rye bread.

Also on site are an old manor house and associated out buildings. There’s a distillery building which is now used as a glassworks. When the farm was active, the cows got the leftover mash, and their manure was used to fertilize the fields. There are two ripening wheat fields of a couple of hectares each, and countless ponds.

The current manor house was built in 1903, and was last occupied by a German count. The tour guide said something about the end of Estonian slavery, but I didn't quite catch what she was saying (I was lifting my jaw off the floor).

The surrounding “park “ is built in the British style, with winding paths and tree lined avenues.  Tree species are planted together, where like is situated with like. There are a few pines, but most of the trees are deciduous. The oldest tree on the property is a 300 year old oak that is split at the base. An arborist has done the necessary bracing to ensure it does not split apart.

It's a beautiful, restful site. I'm lucky to be here for a week.
